I don't know if you've heard the phrase there is no wrong way to scrapbook well when scrapbooking your heritage pictures there is!!! NEVER EVER USE THE ORIGINALS!! Did you get that? lol Why you ask? Old pictures didn't have the ink quality that we have today that lasts for years to come. Old pictures really fade fast!! So here are some tips for you for storing and handling your old pictures.
Tips~
1. Never use the original picture, make copies of the original picture then store the original in an Acid Free box in a dry moderate room temperature. I also scanned all my old pictures and backed them up on a CD. Are yours just thrown in some where? I am having a heart attack for you right now! lol Get them out and store them properly!!
2. Never handle the original pictures without acid fee gloves on. Old pictures especially tin types will suck in the grease from your fingers and hands and you'll have that all over your original picture, it will eventually eat at the ink on your picture as well. Be very gentle with your pictures when handling them, some can be very brittle with age and the picture can crack or break easily. Don't ever allow the pictures to be in direct sunlight the suns rays will break down the picture as well and make them fade over night.
Ok now that I have schooled you the important part of your ancestor pictures we can now begin having some fun with them! lol
To create a 2 page layout, you want them to flow nice and compliment each other when there both put together. So it's the basic concept of the Progressive Page. I work on both pages at the same time. I don't glue them together until I know where I want everything for sure.
Tip~ I love are Anywhere Glue Sticks for scrapbooking!! They bond better to the paper and go a lot farther then any other adhesive. Also when working with the Anywhere Glue Sticks you can lightly press your corners down first to make sure you have everything straight if not you can gently pull it back up and move it where need be.
My picture is of my Great Grandmother and a friend of hers. They would dress up for there Halloween parties. So since it was a theme I scrapbooked for that theme. I used the colors that were in my Designer Series Paper Nite Owl.
Tip~Use the colors that are in your Scrapbooking Paper Patterns takes the guess work out of it and really makes it easier on you!!
My base is Tangerine Tango card stock, then a piece of Basic card stock. Starting on the left and working to the right of the page I cut piece of DSP Nite Owl I used the Scallop Trim Border Punch on it. On top of it I cut a piece of 1 1/4 Basic Black Stripped Grosgrain Ribbon in half. I then frayed out the edges. I love Stampin' Up!s Designers Series Papers for several reasons!! I cut the Skull border out of the DSP Nite Owl on the one side I left a little bit of the pattern on it. I love this border when I saw it, it looked so vintage.
Tip~The DSP Nite Owl has images that you can cut to use as borders, titles, embellishments or etc. This paper pack goes a long ways for your scrapbooking needs!
I cut a piece of Pear Pizzazz card stock; I took the Sanded Background Stamp inked it in Pear Pizzazz and stamped all over the Pear Pizzazz card stock. I then sponged Basic Black ink around the edges. On the bottom I took the crow from the Dark and Dreary Stamp Set, inked it in Basic Black and stamped along the bottom.
I then mounted my picture on Basic Black card stock and attached to the top of the Pear Pizzazz card stock. I love using are punches different ways. I took the Decorative Label Punch and punched out a piece of Tangerine Tango card stock. I sponged the edges in Basic Black and wrote the year in the center with the Basic Black Stampin' Write Markers. I added to Designer Jewels Black Flourish to finish off my little tag.I took the sting that I pulled from the 1 1/4 Basic Black Stripped Ribbon and wrapped it around the bottom then placed my tag over it with Stampin' Dimesionals. In the upper right hand corner I punched out a piece of Tangerine Tango card stock with the Curly Label Punch, I sponged the edges with Basic Black ink and added some Designer Jewels Black Flourish. I cut a piece of Crochet Trim and added it onto my tag. Stampin' Up! has a lot of great product that works well for scrapbooking your ancestors!!!
Tip~When fraying any ribbon save the strings that you pull out, you can use them latter on, either on the same project or on another project. This way you get more value from your money spent!
Since this is a 2 page layout I did all my journaling on the other page. Be sure to come back next Friday to see the other half of this layout!!
